Why Concrete and Dirt Get Their Own Dumpster

An AMC Waste Services roll-off dumpster on a job in the Columbia, SC Midlands

Heavy Material Plays by Different Rules

Break up a patio, a sidewalk, or an old driveway and the pile looks manageable. Then you try to move it. Concrete weighs around two tons per cubic yard, which means a dumpster filled to the top with broken slab would be far past what a truck can legally haul.

That is why concrete, brick, block, and dirt don't go in with your household or construction debris. They get their own dumpster, filled to a lower line, priced by weight. That rule comes from truck weight limits, and it protects you too: a correctly loaded heavy-debris dumpster hauls legally the first time instead of getting partially unloaded in your driveway.

How a Heavy-Debris Load Works

For concrete and dirt work we send a dumpster meant to be loaded partway up, and the driver will tell you where that line is for your material. Clean loads matter here: a dumpster of straight concrete or straight dirt can often go to a crush yard instead of the landfill, which is better for the rate and better all around.

Mixing trash into a concrete load ruins that. One sofa on top of your slab pile turns a clean recyclable load into a landfill load. Keep them separate and everything goes smoother.

What Counts as Heavy Debris

Concrete, brick, pavers, stone, block, dirt, and sand. Asphalt too. If your project makes both kinds of waste, say a patio demo plus a garage cleanout, the answer is usually two dumpsters or one dumpster and a swap: heavy material first, everything else after.

Tell us what you're busting up when you book and we'll set the dumpster up for it. Zack has loaded enough slab to tell you within a minute what your project needs.

Asphalt, Pavers, and the In-Between Loads

Asphalt from an old driveway rides the same way concrete does, and so do pavers, landscape stone, and cinder block. Roof tile and plaster sit in between: heavy enough to watch, light enough to go in a normal dumpster if you tell us up front so we size the weight allowance for it.

Dirt is worth a separate note. Excavation spoil from a pool dig, a regrade, or footings fills a dumpster by weight faster than anything else we haul, and wet dirt weighs noticeably more than dry. If the pile is going to sit through a rain before pickup, say so when you book.

What This Looks Like Around the Midlands

The heavy-debris calls we run are patio and walkway demos in the older Columbia neighborhoods, pool removals in Lexington and Blythewood, and footing spoil on new builds out toward Camden and Elgin. The truck comes from the Lugoff yard either way, on the same day-or-two delivery schedule as everything else we haul, and the booking page shows the rate for your address before you commit. If you're not sure whether your material counts as heavy debris, call and describe it. That conversation takes a minute and saves a mis-sized load.
