The Weekend Plan That Works
We deliver a lot of dumpsters to garages that haven't parked a car in years. The cleanouts that finish in a weekend all run about the same way, so here's the plan, start to finish.
Book the dumpster for Friday. Order by Wednesday or Thursday and it's sitting in the driveway when you wake up Saturday; same-week delivery is the normal case for us, not a rush job.
Saturday: Everything Out, Three Piles
Don't sort inside the garage. Pull everything onto the driveway and make three piles: keep, give away, and the dumpster. The pull-it-all-out step feels like extra work and it's the single thing that keeps a cleanout moving, because deciding is faster when the thing is in your hand and daylight.
Be honest with the keep pile. If it's broken, if it's a project you abandoned two houses ago, if you forgot you owned it, it goes in the dumpster.
Sunday: Load It Right
Load flat and heavy on the bottom, boxes and bags next, bulky awkward stuff on top. Walk the load down as you go. A 10-yard dumpster handles a one-car garage with room to spare, and a packed two-car garage or a garage plus a shed usually wants the 15.
Watch the no-go list: paint cans with wet paint, oil, chemicals, batteries, and tires stay out. Old paint can go in once it's dried out, and most counties around Columbia have a drop-off for the rest.
Sizing It Honestly
Two numbers help you pick between the 10 and the 15. The 10-yard runs 12 by 8 feet with 4-foot walls and includes 1 ton of weight, which covers a one-car garage, a storage room, or a shed with room to spare. The 15 runs 14 by 8 with 4.5-foot walls and 1.5 tons included, and it's the pick when the garage is packed to the ceiling or the shed is coming along for the ride.
When you're between sizes, go up. The step up costs less than a second delivery, and an underfilled dumpster never stopped a project the way a full one does. If the cleanout uncovers heavy surprises, old tile, bags of concrete mix that set in the bag, a cast-iron tub, mention them when you call and we'll make sure the weight allowance matches.
One more note: give us honest placement details when you book. Which side of the driveway, the gate code if there is one, the low branch over the parking pad. A driver who doesn't have to call you from the curb delivers earlier, and your Saturday starts on time.
Done? Call for Pickup
You get 14 days with every rental, but you don't have to use them. Finish Sunday, call Monday, and the dumpster is gone before the HOA notices it was there. Then pull the car in. That's the whole point of the project, and it's a good feeling the first rainy morning afterward.
